Student Dependant Visa Overview

Partners and children may be able to join a Student visa holder in specific circumstances. Eligibility depends on the student’s course, sponsor, relationship, financial evidence, and the current rules.

Student Dependants

Overview & Eligibility

What is a Student dependant visa?

Eligible partners and children of a Student visa holder may apply as dependants when the student’s course and sponsor meet the Immigration Rules. Not every Student visa holder can bring family — course level and start date rules are critical.

Who may qualify?

A partner (spouse, civil partner, or durable partner in limited cases) or child under 18 may qualify if the main applicant’s course permits dependants and relationship and maintenance evidence is strong. We check the student’s CAS and course against the current dependant rules before you apply.

Work and study as a dependant

Dependant work conditions differ from the main student’s. Partners often have more flexible work rights, while children have their own restrictions. Dependants must not become a charge on public funds where that condition applies.

Requirements & Evidence

Relationship evidence

Marriage or civil partnership certificates, birth certificates, and evidence of an ongoing relationship or parental responsibility should be consistent and translated where required.

Link to the main student

Include the student’s visa or BRP/eVisa details, CAS or course confirmation, and proof that the course still permits dependants under the rules in force.

Maintenance for dependants

Additional living-cost funds are usually required per dependant unless an exemption applies. Bank evidence must meet the same format and holding-period rules as the main application.

Applying, Costs & Refusals

How to apply

Dependants can often apply at the same time as the main student or later. Each person needs their own application, fee, and IHS. We sequence applications so relationship and funds evidence stays consistent across the family.

Costs & processing time

Each dependant pays a visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge. Amounts change periodically; confirm current figures on GOV.UK as of 2026. Legal fees depend on family size and complexity — we provide a clear quote after consultation.

Common reasons applications are refused

  • Student’s course does not permit dependants under current rules

  • Insufficient relationship or parental evidence

  • Maintenance funds short of the required amount or holding period

  • Inconsistent information between main and dependant applications

  • Previous immigration refusals not properly addressed

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every Student visa holder bring dependants?

No. Dependant eligibility depends on the student’s course level, start date, and the current rules. We assess the course and family circumstances before an application is made.

Can a student dependant work in the UK?

Dependant work conditions differ from the main student’s conditions. Partners often have broader work rights. We explain the restrictions that apply to your family’s permission.

Do dependants need their own funds?

Usually yes — additional living-cost funds per dependant unless an exemption applies. We calculate the amount and check that bank evidence meets Home Office format rules.
