What is the Youth Mobility Scheme?

The Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) allows young citizens of participating countries to live and work in the UK for a fixed period — usually up to two years — without employer sponsorship or a Certificate of Sponsorship.

Who may qualify

You may qualify if you are a citizen of an eligible country (such as Australia, Canada, or Japan), within the age band (often 18–30, or 18–35 for some nationalities), and have not previously used YMS for that country.

Work flexibility

YMS holders may usually work for most employers and be self-employed with restrictions on professional sport and some other activities. It is not a direct settlement route.

Nationality and age

Valid passport from a participating country and evidence you meet age limits at application date.

Maintenance funds

You usually need £2,530 held for 28 consecutive days before applying — bank statements must show name, dates, and balance clearly.

Previous YMS use

Most schemes allow only one YMS grant per nationality — prior use can bar a second application.

How to apply

Many nationals apply via ballot or quota systems; others apply directly online when slots are open. Submit passport, maintenance evidence, and pay fees, then biometrics. Monitor scheme openings — quotas fill quickly.

Costs & processing time

Application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge apply (amounts subject to change as of 2026). YMS cannot be extended beyond the scheme maximum — plan onward travel or another visa before expiry.

Common reasons applications are refused

• Nationality or age outside scheme rules

• Maintenance funds not held for 28 days or wrong account holder

• Previous Youth Mobility permission for same nationality

• Applying when quota or ballot closed

• Intent to remain beyond temporary scheme not addressed in later applications
